Surviving a Hurricane at an All-Inclusive Resort

By | Article, Blogs, Destinations, Places, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

The only Predictable thing about Mother Earth, is that she’s Unpredictable.

COVID COVID COVID. Have you heard enough about Covid yet? Yes, me too.

Because of Covid, Karisma Hotels & Resorts was unable to host their annual GIVC Awards. Those of you unfamiliar with what the GIVC Awards are, allow me to explain. It’s basically a big party and awards ceremony down in Mexico for top accounts with Karisma.

Though they did not have the full blown event, Karisma did invite a select few of their top accounts to come down on what they called the “Seaside Palms Retreat.”

This was a nice gesture to show how much they appreciate their accounts and agents. They had an awesome Mexican themed welcome dinner for us, and they had other events planned for us. However, Mother Earth didn’t receive an invitation, so she decided to just show up and force her way in.

She did this in the form of Hurricane Zeta.

After having a lovely evening filled with tequila, tacos, and churros, a new day was upon us. This day, which was supposed to be meeting/open discussion day with site inspections and free time, was cut short, for now, they had confirmed that we were in the path of hurricane Zeta – she was to stop at nothing to rain on our parade (no pun intended…well, yes, actually pun fully intended)

I seem to remember it being about 12:30pm, I had just left the meeting hall, the sky was already squeezing out any evidence of a warm Mexican sunshine, and the winds were just barely making their presence known.

We were told that dinner reservation for the evening would be moved up because the restaurants would be closing at 7:00pm. “I hadn’t made any reservations yet.” I remember thinking to myself. Continuing my journey from the meeting hall to my room I stopped at the concierge to make reservations. To my surprise, in the ten minutes it took me to walk to my destination, they had yet again altered dinner plans and I was now being told that “all dinners were a first come first serve.” – no reservations. (essentially every man for himself.)

By 5:00pm the sky was gray and the winds were at sustainable gusts. At this moment I received a message on Facebook. It was my Lomas buddy Jorge. “Hola amigo, restaurants will close at 5:00pm…the hotel will provide box lunches in the rooms and room service available til 7:00pm.” Wonderful, it was past five.

“Let’s make the situation more difficult.”

Now is as good a time as any to add a key factor to this story. I’m doing 75 Hard. It’s not a diet or a challenge fad. It’s a test of mental toughness. Google it. All you need to know is when you’re doing it there are 5 rules you must follow each day for 75 days.

1. Two 45 minute workouts.

2. One gallon of water.

3. Read ten pages of non-fiction.

4. Follow a meal plan.

5. No alcohol or cheat meals.

At 7:00pm we were to be in our rooms for the night until further instructed that we could leave them. The rain had already been falling and most places were shutting down. I was in my room well before 7:00pm. Not being able to eat or drink anything out of the mini-bar, I opted to order what ever I was “allowed” to have from room service. “One chicken caesar salad, one spinach salad, one crispy beef burrito, and one grilled chicken and veggies.” I proudly declared over the phone knowing this was a lot for one person to order. “Mr. Kramer, at this moment we are only allowing two plates per room.” the voice on the other end muttered, absolutely crushing my dreams.

Only two plates. A salad, a small chicken breast and veggies to hold me over until sometime tomorrow. I was in for a long night.

The “box lunch” arrived. A ham sandwich (one single slice of ham) with an apple and a juice box. Served in a brown paper bag, this truly felt like something a lazy mother would pack for their 8th grader. “Ahh, lovely, a sandwich, can’t have that. An apple, might snack on that. A juice box…reads side of box which is in Spanish – azúcar: 48g, can’t drink that.” For someone not doing 75 Hard, I’m sure this would have been a good lunch, which was being served at dinner time.

Some time around 7:00pm my room service arrived. If this was just a little snack to enjoy in my room I wouldn’t have been so underwhelmed. But this was suppose to be my dinner, the substance that was to last me “until further notice.” The salad was tasty, but only comparable to a side salad. The ones most people throw away. The grilled chicken was cooked to perfection. However, it was too small and the veggie portions were so tiny it would’ve made a child jump for joy that this was all the vegetables he had to eat before being dismissed from the table. For a moment, after finishing every bite, I sat and pondered if this would be enough…”Would I survive this storm? Would my hunger drive me to leave my room before allowed, on a dangerous quest to find more food?” Only time will tell.

“Through the night and into the day.”

For most of the evening I found myself on my laptop, with Two and a Half Men (in Spanish) on the TV as background noise. The wind was now at a continuous howl. The palm trees were all bending in unison to the right. The thatched roofs were being tested for their strength. White-caps had started to form in my pool as if it were a small model of the ragging seas. Much of the night went on like this. Hangout on the bed. Hear a loud gust of wind. Get up, poke my head out my back door to see if I would witness a roof or tree or something being hurled through the air. I never got to witness this, and at some point, turned the lights off and let the sounds of the hurricane send me off to sleep.

The next morning I immediately went to my back patio to asses the damage. What I saw was not all that bad. Lots of palm fronds in the pool and all over the ground. A majority of the chairs in the area had made their way into the pool over night. Things were blown around, but no major structural damage.

Around 11:00am they released us from our luxury hurricane bunkers. I chose to walk around the property because I wanted to see how things held up and because I knew the chaos that was bound to be going on at the one open restaurant must be avoided at all costs. I eventually had lunch and was graced by a Mexican rock band playing Santana and the Eagles in hopes to lighten everyones spirits. It seemed to be working, or perhaps it was the long socially distanced line that lead up to the bar. Either way the sun was starting to peak through the clouds and things were getting better.

Only one pool was open, maybe one bar was open and the all-inclusive vibe was not there. The scene felt like the guests were trying to pretend as if nothing happened – drink their drinks and hang in the pool. Mostly it just felt like everyone was in the way of the staff, trying desperately to clean up the resort.

I was due to leave the next morning, and the highlight of my evening (post hurricane) was a non-alcoholic beverage I had at our farewell cocktail party which was taking place of our farewell dinner that was supposed to be at Margaritaville Island Reserve. The second highlight was being able to have dinner at my beloved Mexican restaurant, “La Carretta.”

“The only worthy adventure is adventure itself. “

All-in-all this was an interesting trip. I’m glad to have experienced a hurricane. Now I can tell clients how they will be handled in the event this happens to them. However, if you’re not doing 75 Hard and anything goes; here are some recommendations I would make in order to maximize your vacation fun during a hurricane.

If there is any talk that a hurricane will be making land fall, you need to stop what you’re doing and switch into preparation mode.

Something to note, in Mexico if there is a hurricane coming, it is law that alcohol stop being served at 3:00pm. What you want to do is get a twenty dollar bill and some empty bottles or mugs and head to the bar. Your mini-fridge should be stocked with decent mixers, so all you need to do is stock up on your spirit(s) of choice so you can continue the party after you’re in your room “until further notice.”

Food. At some point everything will be closed, even room service. If you’re okay with the super basic ham & cheese, you can skip this step. As soon as you know about the hurricane you need to order room service. Be sure to order things that you’re okay with eating cold. Make sure to order as many pizzas as they allow you to order. You can always heat a slice of pizza up on your iron that is found in your room. (just be kind and wash it off after it cools.)

Besides all of that alcohol you have stored in used bottles of sunscreen, you’ll need to make sure you have enough water. For one, it’s a necessity, but you’ll also want enough to make coffee the next morning. Odds are you won’t be able to leave your room for quite some time.

The power may go out. Most properties have back-up generators (the El Dorado brand has them) but it’s smart to keep your phone on the charger throughout the day just incase the power goes out.

Lastly, try to make the best of it. Hurricanes suck, and can put a dampener on any vacation. Following these steps above will ensure your survival. In most cases the hurricane will last one day or night. By the next morning things should be getting back to normal. Be proud about hunkering down at an all inclusive resort and riding the storm out. Though it takes away from some of your vacation, at least you’ll have a good story to tell.

Travel Specialist Makes Custom Face Masks During COVID-19 Pandemic

By | Article, Blogs, Business, Fashion, Industry, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want. – Zig Ziglar

That is exactly what one of our travel specialist did. She helped enough people get what they want. Actually, it was more of what they needed and less of what they wanted.

Covid-19 – It blindsided us and flipped our world upside down. Those of us in the travel industry have seen a halt on everything. For the last month and a half travel agents have mostly been putting out fires, canceling trips, and rescheduling trips for later dates.

Staying proactive in this time is key for getting through to the other side. You can’t put your travel business on hold and wait for this to pass. You have to continue training yourself and thinking of clever ways to provide your service.

One of our Travel Specialist found a way to supply a need in her community and promote her travel business.

Roberta Jarrett holds no title. She is a “Jack of all Trades” or Jill. She sells travel like crazy, she has completely renovated houses by herself, and now she’s sewing custom face masks.

Since March 14th she has made and mailed over 700 masks. (as I’m writing this, I’m sure that number has greatly increased) Roberta is located in Michigan, but has shipped masks as far as Arizona and California. She has donated well over 150 masks to her local medical facilities, nurses, and group homes.

“I’ve literally been making masks 12 to 16 hours a day at my dining table.”

She has now expanded her product line and she’s getting requests for scrub caps.

I know what you’re thinking. She has abandoned her travel business to become a seamstress. That’s not the case and that is definitely not the Roberta way. Every order and every donation that she fulfills gets her business card. (her travel business card)

Think about it. Who is she sending these masks to?

She’s sending masks to the people on the front lines. The people who have dedicated hours of their days to help the sick. To the people who are putting their own health at risk. And these fine folks are going to need a vacation when this is all over.

Thanks to Covid-19, we know that online booking sites can’t be trusted. Naturally, this is going to have people looking for a real person (travel agent) to handle their vacation needs. Who do you think these people are going to turn to when they’re ready to plan a vacation?

You guessed it, Roberta!

Roberta didn’t let a negative situation stop her travel business. She adapted and turned it into a positive. Who knows, maybe she gained more potential clients from making masks than she would have if Covid-19 never even happened.

Now Accepting Costco Travel Clients

Now Accepting Costco Travel Clients

“You can do 99 things for someone and all they’ll remember is the one thing you didn’t do.”

We can all agree that Costco does more than 99 things for their customers. Are there many other stores where you can buy reading glasses, an 85 inch tv, flowers, a years worth of gum, steak, garage storage, a pillow, kitchen appliances, 12 pounds of Cheez-its, books, running shorts, olive oil, bean bag chair, outdoor grill, 1000 paper plates, a gallon of vodka, new tires, and a vacation?

Costco does a lot. More than fathomable in this short read. However, due to COVID-19, Costco didn’t do that one thing and we all forgot about the 99 other things they do great.

That one thing has to do with their vacations division, Costco Travel. Because a true Costco customer just can’t get enough of Costco, it seems reasonable to believe that they would trust Costco with their vacation.

When COVID-19 hit us like a ton of bricks, the travel industry (along with others) came to – basically – a halt. With the new suggestions of not traveling internationally or even domestically, people started to cancel their much needed vacations.

All of the major brands like Costco Travel, BookIt, Expedia, Orbitz (you know who I’m talking about) started getting flooded with calls to cancel vacations. And who was placing these calls? Not travel agents. Customers. Everyday people were now acting as their own travel agent. They didn’t have anyone in their corner to sit on hold for hours and get the situation straightened out.

Now, I don’t have every single detail from every major brand, but I know that most were unreachable and some were not issuing any type of refund. Naturally, this has made many everyday travelers upset. I would be willing to bet that a lot of these people will now be Googling Travel Agent when it comes time to book their next vacation.

There are two things that will spike when COVID-19 has subsided.

1. People will definitely be purchasing travel insurance (commissionable).

2. People will be more likely to use a trusted Travel Agent for all their travel needs.

This is very good news that should be inspiring you to learn all you can now, so you can be ready when the flood gates open back up.

Attention! “We are now accepting Costco Travel clients!”

Everything Has A Beginning & End

By | Article, Blogs, Business, Vacations

Everything Has A Beginning & End

We get it, you’re stuck right in the middle of this nonsense. We’ve watched too much news and too many Zombie movies on Netflix. The world as we know it is over. I’ll let you have that thought or opinion, and if it helps you cope with the situation at hand, then so be it.

What we need to keep in mind though, is everything has a beginning and an end. Kinda like those Zombie movies. At some point, the end credits are going to roll. When they do finally roll and this is over and we’re allowed to move about the cabin freely, where are you going to be?

Are you going to be stuck with 286 rolls of toilet paper? Or are you going to be armed and ready to take on all of the people who need a VACATION?

See, there are two types of people in situations like this. (well there’s probably more than two, but for this we’ll just pick two.)

Type 1: Information Overload – PANIC – Freakout – Worry Warrior – Sky is Falling – Toilet Paper Enthusiast

Type 2: Intakes just enough information to stay in the know – Remains Calm – Gives Encouragement – Stays Positive – Plans Ahead

Now the type 1’s are going to need a vacation, and they’ll take one, but first they have to get their life back on track.

The type 2’s will be ready the second the starting gate gun goes off. (And by gun I mean all of this is over, and it’s back to normal.)

All this to say, travel ain’t goin’ nowhere and the travel industry is going to SNAP BACK, and it’s gonna SNAP BACK hard. Question is, will you be ready when it does? I sure hope so!

For now, do your part. Stay positive, wash your hands, stay home, give encouragement to those who need it, and hang in there. This is a bummer, but we’re going to get through it. And the end credits will roll sooner than later.

The Best Things to do at Night on Vacation

By | Article, Blogs, Featured, Food, Places, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

For night owls on vacation daytime activities and sightseeing won’t be enough to tire us out! When in a foreign place, you can get stuck in the hotel room wondering what there is to do. Here are just a few awesome night activities in some of the best vacation spots.

1. Night Kayaking in a Bioluminescent Bay

The inspo for this blog post comes from my upcoming trip to Puerto Rico. I don’t have any excursions planned other than night kayaking in the bioluminescent bay. There are a few bioluminescent bays (or glow in the dark water!!!) around the world, but the one I will be visiting is The Farjado Bio Bay. This is an activity only done at night and is a uniquely memorable experience.

2. River Cruise on the Seine

Image result for night cruise seine

A river cruise on the Seine is a good activity for anytime a day, but in the city of lights, this is one of the best ways to experience Paris. This can also be a romantic outing with the cruise offering romantic dinners on board.

3. Bar Crawl in Cancun

Image result for bar crawl cancun night

If you are a partier, there is no place like Cancun. I don’t have to tell you that there are hundreds of bars and clubs: the nightlife in Cancun is very alive and will surely keep you entertained. You and your friends can do a bar crawl or even just sit back and people watch, either will keep you entertained.

4. Visit the Sky Garden in London

The Sky Garden in London is a great option for night activities. Get there before sundown and have an amazing view of the city. The Sky Garden is open until 9 pm, but the bars inside are open until 1 am. The photo above is from their New Year’s Eve party, so if you can make it to one of their special events, it’s worth it.

5. ArtafterDark Museum Tour

Related image

This photo does not do the Honolulu museum justice, but it shows how fun ArtafterDark is. This event is held one Friday a month by volunteer local artists who love art and partying. The museum is home to over 50,000 pieces of art, and who doesn’t love looking at art drunk? This is a very popular event with lines sometimes wrapping around the building. This would be a great change of pace after relaxing on a beautiful beach all day.

No matter if you are a day or night owl, be sure to book your trip with a Luxevo Vacations Travel Specialist. We do all the work so you can focus on relaxing and not spending all of your time booking.

Places to Travel in America 2020

By | Article, Blogs, Destinations, feature, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

As the New Year rings in travel junkies are already planning their travel itinerary for 2020. We often talk about tropical destinations on this blog, but I thought it would be interesting to explore some cool American locations that are worth seeing this year.

1. Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Image result for antelope canyon

Antelope Canyon is a pair of naturally stunning slot canyons. One of them is referred to as the corkscrew, and the other, horseshoe. The Canyon is so photographable, the aesthetic beauty brand Glossier has created a replica in their showroom in Malibu.

This is a photo of me and my friend at the faux Antelope Canyon.

You can take a trip to Phoenix Arizona and make the road trip to Antelope Canyon for a day trip. The Canyons are a guaranteed way to get amazing travel photos, with people taking photography tours.

2. Key West, Florida

Image result for key west

Key West is not an obscure travel choice, but I thought it was worth mentioning since it is a time-sensitive vacation: with the oceans rising, Key West will cease to exist in around 10 years. Of course, you can do the typical Key West activities, drinking, eating, and more drinking, but the Keys has made it onto my places to visit because of the home of Ernest Hemingway.

Image result for key west ernest hemingway

If you are a literature buff, this is a great landmark to visit. I think it is an amazing piece of history and is allegedly a limited time availability.

3. Grand Prismatic Spring, Wyoming

Image result for Grand Prismatic Spring, Wyoming

This one speaks for itself. The Grand Prismatic Spring is a stunning natural rainbow wonder. It is a very large hot spring in Yellowstone National park. It is the 3rd largest hot spring in the world and is a sight to see.

4. Lake Tahoe, California

Image result for lake tahoe

Lake Tahoe is in Northern California and its definitely a must-see. As you can see, the lake is crystal clear. I visited Lake Tahoe during Christmas last year, and there was sledding, skiing, and other snow activities that were very fun. I think Lake Tahoe would be great to see during the summer; the lake transforms with kayaks, blow-ups, and people swimming in the crystal Lake.

5. Austin, Texas

Austin is often referred to as the only place worth visiting in Texas. I think the best time to visit Austin is during one of their renowned music festivals with SXSW (South by Southwest) in March, which is also a film festival, and Austin City Limits in October. This will ensure you have plenty to do, along with eating Barbeque and all of the other foodie restaurants that litter the city.

So these are just some ideas for you guys to explore this year. You don’t have to go outside of the country to experience some really beautiful places! No matter where your adventure takes you this year, be sure to book with a Luxevo Vacations Travel Specialist. Not only will they get you to your destination, but they will also tailor your trip to you so you get the MOST out of your vacation, at the same price as booking it yourself. Be sure to visit our links at the top of this page.

I’m Running Away to Puerto Rico for Christmas (You should too)

By | Article, Blogs, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

This morning it was 50 degrees in Bradenton, Florida so needless to say, it’s winter. Luckily for me, these 6 days of winter we will receive will fade quickly. For those of you just entering a real winter season, have no fear: Puerto Rico is here.

got GIF by Game of Thrones: #PrepareForWinter

This year I am escaping the 60-degree weather of Christmas in Florida for the year-round paradise of Puerto Rico and there are many reasons why I think everyone should be doing the same. Puerto Rico is predicted to be 85 degrees on Christmas day, making it a perfect candidate for summer emulation. It is also a good option for those who haven’t gotten around to getting a passport.

Puerto Rico Nbc GIF by Sunnyside

*Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S. that allows you to travel without a passport.

Being half Puerto Rican I am a little bias, but Puerto Rico has so much to offer. The food, the beaches, and the culture are unbeatable.

Food

jimmy fallon love GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Let’s get down to business and talk about the most important thing: food. Some of my favorite meals happen to be Puerto Rican, and if you have no knowledge of Puerto Rican cuisine or Spanish in general, choosing something off of a menu might seem daunting. Although you probably won’t go wrong, here are a few of my favorite things.

Image result for here are a few of my favorite things gif

ropa vieja dinner GIF

(this looks like Cuban rice and beans, which happens to be my other half, but that’s neither here nor there.) If you are new to Puerto Rican cuisine the easiest gateway is rice and beans. You can’t go wrong, and you’ll find it at almost every restaurant on the island. It is usually red kidney beans and in my mind, the rice looks like this: a perfectly shaped dome.

Image result for puerto rican white rice shape

There are too many good fried foods which are also staples. Every time I am at my Abuela’s house for dinner, the meal starts with fried foods straight from the fryer and onto a paper towel.

My number one favorite fried PR app is Alcapurrias which are Green Plantain fritters filled with ground beef.

Image result for alcapurrias

They may look lackluster, but they are crunchy, salty, and oily making them the perfect appetizer in my opinion.

Next on the list is Papas Rellenas which are stuffed potatoes.

Image result for papas rellenas puerto rico

Next up is another weird-shaped blandly colored item that I will try to convince you is amazing. This consists of mashed potatoes filled with ground seasoned beef rolled in breading and fried. Usually, you cut them in half and drizzle a hot sauce in.

One of my fondest memories of visiting Puerto Rico was the time we were traveling across the island to the rainforest and stopped off at a random food truck on the side of the road. It had a stunning view of the ocean, and we ordered a full fish that had been freshly caught just hours before. It’s eyes still intact and it’s mouth agape, we dug into the crunchy lime sprinkled skin. I was only 7 years old and a fairly picky eater, but I contended that this was most definitely the best thing I had ever tasted.

Image result for puerto rican whole fish

It looked a lot like this fish, but I have never been able to find a fish that quite matched since leaving the island. I hope that on this return trip I will find my lost Pescado.

This being said, I think that when in Puerto Rico you should try the hole in the wall places because you never know what you might find. These are just a few of the things that stick out in my mind as being my favorite, but there is so much to be had.

Experiences

When I go on a tropical vacation I will spend 97% of my time doing as little as possible on a beach. Puerto Rico has plenty of jaw-dropping beaches with fluffy powder sand and blue waters filled with a multitude of exotic fish, so even if you do decide to vegetate on the sand, you are in for an experience.

The other times I have visited the island, and for my upcoming trip, I will be bringing cheap snorkeling gear to hopefully do some see fish.

The best thing about snorkeling in Puerto Rico is the fact that you can be in very shallow water and still see some cool things. You can see from the picture above how close this woman is to the surface. I am not that strong of a swimmer, and I was able to enjoy this at 7 years old.

Image result for waterfalls puerto rico

Don’t go chasing waterfalls? Or DO! El Yunque national park is home to one of Puerto Rico’s most beautiful waterfalls, La Coca Falls. This fall is easily accessible from the road and has a designated viewing area making it perfect for sightseers who aren’t ready to make a treacherous hike. This being said, if you are up for the challenge there is a trail that is quoted being “not for the faint of heart”, but sometimes more difficult things are worth it.

Image result for puerto rico bat caves

There are also bat caves. They look like something out of 2001 a Space Odyssey- with bats!

Related image

Not only are the bats very interesting, and slightly terrifying, but the cave itself is beautiful and interesting. The photo above is not an accurate representation because you are typically in a large group of people slowly following a tour guide through the cave in an elementary style single file line.

Talking about bats, you should take a tour of the Bacardi factory in Old San Juan. I took the tour when I was in second grade, following behind my parents tasting all of the various flavors of rum, including exclusive flavors. I would love to take this tour now as a 23-year-old who is an avid fan of Bacardi lol.

This is just a snippet of all of the things Puerto Rico has to offer. I could put together a whole other article outlining food, experiences, and places to see throughout the small jammed pack island. If you are experiencing a real winter, I would suggest running away!

If you are already planning to getaway, be sure to reach out to a Luxevo Vacations Travel Specialist that can make your escape plan super easy.

The Best Reviewed Restaurants in the World

By | Article, Blogs, feature, Places, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

There’s been a trend online of going to the Most Expensive Restaurant in My City. I was intrigued to find out what the most expensive, highly rated restaurants were in some of the most popular cities to visit in the world. These are not something most people get to enjoy, but I found it very interesting while doing my research, even if I’ll never get to eat at any of these places.

forget about it fox GIF by makinghistory

The first city on the list is London.

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, London

Alain Ducasse at the dorchester_

The first restaurant is located inside of The Dorchester, a 5-star hotel in the heart of London. To give you an idea of the caliber of this posh hotel, a King Room will cost you nearly $900. The restaurant is that of Alain Ducasse, a prestigious French chef. The restaurant holds 3 Michelin Stars and is home to the Cartier Race Awards (I’ve never heard of this, but it’s probably because I am too poor).

View image on Twitter

These people have what I like to call resting rich face

This is what one person had to say about the room service at The Dorchester hotel. I am sure it is not prepared by the kitchen of Alain Ducasse, but it is incredible to see what sort of luxury food is served even when just calling for room service. Pizza served a la morceau de Bois, translation: Pizza served on a piece of wood.

will ferrell lol GIF

As for the menu at Alain Ducasse’s restaurant, there isn’t one to choose from. You pay for a 7-course experience that will cost you about $200 per person. They base their menu off of the seasons: for the Fall season, they are featuring Wild boar, mushrooms, marigolds, leeks, grapefruits, walnuts, and figs.

Here are some photos of past meals served at the restaurant:

They even over an exclusive offer to sit at the Table Lumière or the Table of lights which is located at the very center of the restaurant and surrounded by thousands of fiberoptic strings. This table will cost you around $300 per person.

It’s like a rich person’s blanket fort!

Aragawa, Tokyo

Aragawa in Tokyo topped the charts for the most highly-rated restaurant in Tokyo, along with being voted one of the most expensive dining experiences in the world. They are most well known for their saki fed Kobe beef (Purebreed Tajima Cattle to be exact), which is sourced from only one local farm. A piece of this steak will cost you around $400 US dollars.

Excuse Me Reaction GIF by Mashable

But Agawa is rated as one of the best restaurants in the world for a reason. This will quite possibly be the best steak you’ll ever taste.

Ko, New York,  New York

We couldn’t possibly do a “best of” without including New York City. There were many restaurants to choose from in the city, but Ko topped many of the food blogger’s lists that I found. Along with the rest of the restaurants on this list, this is a Michelin rated restaurant garnering 2 stars. Ko is a unique eating experience: for $255 you’ll earn yourself a front-row seat to a culinary experience. Reservations need to be made 3o days in advanced to enjoy the curated menu. You do not get to choose what your meal will be, and the website warns that you may wait up to 2.5 hours to eat. For such a steep price and wait time, we must assume the food is outstanding. I’m not sure what exactly you will be eating here but it is described as “Asian accented American meals” (along with sushi).

If you are ready to splurge on your next vacation, any of these options would be more than suffice- the biggest understatement of the century. I have to say that a couple of these have no made it to my mental bucket list.

But no matter where your next vacation will be, or how many Michelin stars your meal will have, book with Luxevo Vacations.

The Non-tourist Guide to Paris

By | Article, Blogs, Destinations, feature, Tips & Tricks, Vacations

Paris is a dream vacation for many people (myself included). I was lucky enough to visit for 4 days when I graduated from high school, but now I have the desire to return and avoid all of the tourists traps I fell into on my family vacation. As you do when you are obsessing over a future vacation, I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of Youtube videos. The first mistake my  family and I made the first time around was visiting Paris in July. I’ve learned that this is the month with the highest tourism rate, and one of the hottest months as well. We were frustrated a lot of the trip because of the immense amount of people no matter where we went (not to mention that it smells like pee and sweat!).

The best time to visit the city is between April and June.

I am a very thrifty person: no matter where I visit, I look up the nearest thrift shops and antique shops. Paris, being such an old city, has some amazing vintage finds. You can visit Le Puces,  one of the oldest flea markets in Paris.

There you will find hundreds of stalls filled with oddities and rarities, trinkets and priceless antiques. This is a great way to spend the day perusing the different stalls and finding unique keepsakes to remember your long awaited trip to France. After you are done shopping, you can head to a unique Parisian Cafe. You could try out Chez Louisette that offers classic casual French cuisine with musicians and singers.

There are some unique food options for those who are feeling like getting out of their comfort zone. You can try the infamous escargot. (snails)

After being surrounded by people in the city, you can head to a ghost town right outside of the city, or the Goussainville.

This town is just 20km (12 miles) outside of Paris is almost completely abandoned. It was abandoned in the 70s after an airport was built right next door and polluted the untouched town with the booming sound of jet engines. There is a bookstore that has taken home amongst the ghosts-

Very odd to find a dying commodity in a deceased town. You’ll have the town almost all to yourself. This is definitely a unique excursion and makes for some interesting photos.

Another great thing to do in Paris is visit a park. This is a Parisian favorite: art, wine, food, and art in the park. You can visit the Coulée verte René-Dumont: a linear park built on top of a railway.

You can walk along the pathway and have a scenic stroll, or buy yourself some pastries and cheese from a local bakery and relax in the grass. You are sure to hear some music being played, or see some painting being, well painted.

You can’t come to Paris without eating 50 pastries minimum (this is the law!). You can choose from thousands, but one that is a Parisian favorite is Poilâne.

Poilâne is a renowned baker who has won multiple awards. He is most known for his loaf “Le Pain des Ami” that is cooked in a wood fire oven. He also has all of the classic Parisian pastries so this is a perfect go-to.

When in a city with such a rich history of the Fine Arts, you cannot miss out on a trip to a museum. Consider the Petit Palais.

This stunning museum has it all: architecture from the 1900s, Monet Paintings, a beautiful courtyard. The best part is, entry is FREE!

Can't get over how beautiful it is!

At the end the end of your long Parisian adventure, you can stop at a classic sidewalk cafe and enjoy an espresso.

My Trip to LA (Documented in Food)

This past summer I went to the city of dreams to celebrate. This was my second time visiting Los Angeles, so I knew not to expect anything out of a Miley Cyrus song…

got off the plane at LAX 🎶

LA is a very conflicting place. There is extreme wealth, and extreme poverty with shanty towns built under every bridge you pass beneath. It isn’t the glamorous place you often seen it portrayed as.

The thing that I really love about LA, is that there is no shortage of things to do and food to eat. I am Celiac so often times am very limited at restaurants in Florida, but in LA I was able to eat almost anywhere many times with a separate Gluten Free menu. Even though LA isn’t everything I thought it would be, I was blown away by all the food that I ate. I am the type of person who plans my vacations around my next meal. This was last trip was for my 23rd birthday so I really indulged myself on food.

Since food is obviously the most important part of any vacation, I am going to outline my trip to LA in everything I ate.

Postmates

I think the thing I spent the most money on during my trip was Postmates. If you don’t know what Postmates is, it’s an app that lets you order ANYTHING you want at pretty much any time. The first night I got into the city, I didn’t get to my Airbnb until 1 am and I was starving. Me and my best friend spent $12 for the luxury of having a giant box of parmesan garlic fries delivered straight to our door. They were slightly soggy from the drive, but the convenience of not moving from the couch is unbeatable. I wish I had a photo of this massive cardboard box of fries, but it’s pretty much exactly what you would imagine: slightly floppy shoe string fries covered in parmesan and garlic crumbs.

Throughout the trip I used Postmates just for the sake of using it. To my defense, without a car, going to get my own food would entail an Uber drive that could cost up to $12 just for a few mile ride.

Coffee

My obsession in LA is Alfred’s Coffee. I get an Iced Oatmilk Latte with Classic Sweetener and it is the creamiest, smoothest, most delicious coffee I’ve ever had the privilege of sipping. I made it a point to try and drink at least one every day of my trip. My favorite location is the one in Studio City.

Every location is unique, but equally aesthetic. I loved this location because the street is quiet, and there were people with their friends and dogs sitting on the porch and talking. It had a very European Cafe feel where people aren’t just glued to their laptop screen, but are actually using coffee as a hangout. Studio city has a residential feel in some parts, and this street in particular had a Mid Century feel with many original buildings from the 60s era.

Me and my friend sat on the porch and people watched, then walk down the street to some local vintage shops. It was my favorite part of the entire city because it was quiet, clean, and had a very unique eclectic style. And of course, the coffee was outstanding.

Brunch

On my birthday, me and all of my friends went to brunch! We went to Sage Bistro in Culver city. We didn’t know when we found it on google, that it was 100% plant based, but that didn’t affect the taste at all.

We started off with their “Buffalo Wings” that were made out of cauliflower. These were one of my favorite things I ate the entire trip: 10/10. They somehow achieved a very similar texture to chicken wings, and their vegan ranch was amazing.

Avocado toast is King at brunch, and Sage Bistro’s avo toast did not disappoint. This photo shows “regular” bread, but as I mentioned before I am unfortunately gluten free. They made my toast on a gluten free bagel, which was surprisingly chewy and not dry. It was great, and not something I ever get to have at restaurants in Florida.

Sushi

Not sure why I look terrified by my sushi roll in this photo?

For my birthday, I went to SUGARFISH, a popular sushi restaurant in Downtown LA.

They are well known on instagram for their aesthetic sushi bento boxes. You wont find a spider roll or a volcano roll on the menu; SUGARFISH specializes in simple, high quality rolls that really feature the flavor of the fish. I had a scallop roll, a tuna roll, and a lobster roll. There wasn’t many other ingredients in the roll other than the fish itself, and it was all delicious. The fish melts in your mouth, with no rubbery bite. I would compare the quality of fish to that of Nobu, notably the most famous sushi restaurant in Los Angeles (with the hefty price tag included). SUGARFISH was a lot cheaper and did not compromise on quality.

One thing is for sure, I need to get back to LA and eat a lot more food- I wouldn’t have to repeat anything (except Alfred’s Coffee of course)
