Many people have a destination bucket list: usually it’s a trip to Paris, Tokyo, or New York City. Along with all of those places, I want to outline some off the beaten path places that should be on everyone’s destination bucket list.
1. San Sebastian, Spain
San Sebastian is a basque city in Spain nestled between mountains and the border of France. Because of it’s close quarters to Spain’s French neighbors, the food and culture is a concoction of the two. I first heard of San Sebastian on Anthony Bourdain’s show Parts Unknown. He raved about the rich culinary culture the city had to offer, and it’s obviously stunning appearance. San Sebastian is a resort town studded with world class chefs, world famous beaches, and upscale shopping that lines the cobblestone streets.
It’s most famous beach La Concha is a sort of old world Malibu. Lined with beautiful homes and luxury restaurants.
Like most places in Spain, pintxos (pin-chos) are a staple. Little appetizers that just keep coming. San Sebastian being a costal city, pintxos will include seafood.
I’d like to think I would be daring and eat some squid and octopus legs that are off-puttingly anatomically still in tact.
2. Lisbon, Portugal
I think we are already seeing a trend in my bucket list: beautiful blue waters, mountains on the horizon, and rustic buildings. Libson is the capital of Portugal and is known for it’s pastel buildings and beautiful sites.
Like San Francisco, Lisbon is known for its rickety tram system that will take you down the winding roads of the city.
Lisbon is 2700 years old making it one of the oldest cities in the European continent. That being said- there’s a castle! On my bucket list trip, I would be sure to wander around St. George’s Castle.
3. Bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico
This is a glow in the dark kayak tour….need I say more? Really? Ok, well in the bay of Fajardo Puerto Rico are flagellates or microorganisms. They make their food through photosynthesis, and this process causes them to glow! There’s not much more to say haha.
4. Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
I would love to visit Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. This crater was created 7 thousand years ago by the collapse of a volcano. What we were left with, is a stunning lake knows for its vibrant clear waters. I think this is just a site to see even if just for a day trip.
5. Amsterdam (During the Cherry Blossom Festival)
At the end of March, there is a celebration of spring called the Cherry Blossom Festivals. All of the cherry blossom trees that fill Amsterdam are blooming and it is such a beautiful sight to see. I would love to have a whimsical picnic under the canopy of light pink flowers.
